The handbook serves as a bridge between high-tech immersion and classroom reality, offering a protected space for adolescents to analyse complex social and environmental issues such as migration, historical trauma, and sustainability. It is designed to foster 21st-century skills, specifically targeting the development of critical thinking, digital literacy, and the ability to construct meaning through collaborative dialogue. By focusing on perspective-taking, the resources help students move beyond an initial emotional reaction to a rational understanding and action-oriented empathy.

  • The handbook contains 8 VR-integrated lesson plans covering essential themes such as Multiculturalism in Europe, migration, climate change, and digital literacy, among others
  • Lessons include a diverse range of interactive tasks, from immersive VR experiences (4–6 minute videos) and individual reflection to group problem-solving, creative writing, and the production of “zines” or student-led exhibitions.
  • The plans are designed for maximum flexibility, allowing teachers to adapt sessions to either 45- or 90-minute formats. The methodology incorporates structured exploration, “World Café” rotating discussions, and step-by-step instructions that require no advanced technical skills from the teacher.
  • While centred on the use of 3DoF VR goggles, the handbook also integrates popular digital tools such as Mentimeter, Padlet, Canva, Mural, and Miro to engage students in dynamic polls and collaborative teamwork

The handbook is available in English, Portuguese, Hellenic, and Slovenian!

All lessons were structured to support teachers in using the immersive videos developed in the scope of the project to promote students’ empathy in classes, covering three main topics:

  • European Citizenship and Diversity
  • European Historical Facts
  • European Social Common Values, European Citizenship, and Diversity

These VR-based videos were developed using a co-design process, involving teachers from the three countries, as you can see in this news. All videos are available in English, Portuguese, Hellenic and Slovenian, at the project’s YouTube page and on this website (here).

We challenge you to transform Virtual Reality into a purposeful tool for fostering cognitive empathy with our practical new handbook!
