In a remarkable leap forward for the VR4Empathy project, 43 teachers from 14 schools across Corinth and Attica have completed the highly anticipated Train-the-Teachers programme. Spanning 4 days, the programme combined online modules and in-person workshops, immersing educators in the innovative world of virtual reality and its potential to foster empathy in the classroom.

The teachers came from a diverse range of subjects, from languages to mathematics, each eager to discover how VR technology could transform their teaching approach. The programme didn’t just focus on the technicalities of using VR equipment but also on the educational script and interactive VR videos that would help them build cognitive empathy in their students.

A key element of the course was the focus on cognitive empathy – the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Through VR, the teachers learned how to guide students through powerful experiences that place them in the shoes of people from different walks of life, allowing them to better understand diverse perspectives. This is especially critical in fostering compassion and emotional intelligence among students, who can then carry these lessons into their communities.

Now, with the VR equipment ready to be deployed to the schools, the next exciting phase begins: pilot classroom implementations. Teachers will soon be taking the VR4Empathy methodology into real classrooms, where students will engage with the immersive content first-hand. These pilots will allow educators to fine-tune their approaches while gathering valuable feedback on how to make the experience even more impactful for their students.

The project’s impact has already been felt: teachers have reported increased confidence in using VR as a teaching tool and are eager to see their students benefit from the powerful experiences that VR can provide. Looking ahead, the success of these pilot implementations will be closely monitored to ensure the VR4Empathy methodology can be scaled across more schools, not just in Greece but also in other parts of Europe. The long-term vision is for VR4Empathy to become an integral part of education systems, helping to cultivate a generation of students who are more empathetic, compassionate, and understanding of the world around them.
